DONNA'S CAREER PICKS UP MOMENTUM
HERE COMES SUMMER...........

January 1978, One night my friend called me, all excited "Donna Summer is on the Merv Griffin!!!..." I hung up, was in front of the TV before she could say "show!".
There she was in living color.
The Look:
Hair: Dark, straight, shoulder length, ends turned under, parted on one side, all the top pulled over into a side ponytail.
Make-up: Kind of natural, brows were high, but not too thin, nice lashes, red lips.
Dress: Black sequined vest type top. Long black flowing skirt.
Songs: I LOVE YOU & ...
Neil & Joyce Bogart were guests. DONNA was very shy, (I think sharing the stage with them did it)

ONCE UPON A TIME TOUR: 3 Nights in L.A.!
June 17,1978 By the time Once Upon A Time came out, my Parents were Donna Summer fans too. When they advertised the concert, I asked my Dad if he could get me tickets. Well it turned out he had a friend who worked a Universal! He got 10 tickets! 13th row! Right away I told him I needed 5 of them. Mine were for my Graduation! So I invited my 2 best friends (and Donna fans) and my 2 disco cousins. He kept the other 5 for Mom and 3 friends.There was magic in the air. The Universal Amplitheater was still an outdoor venue. The weather was very nice, the sun just down for the night, so the place was still a bit lit. On each side of the stage, climbing vines with little lights. We walked in well before dark. The Ushers handed out little programs that looked like the Once Upon a Time album. Inside was the list of this night's songs. What a treasure!

I checked out the crowd, wishing I was an adult, free to be me, but I was just a kid. I don't remember if they announced it, or just flashed the lights to signal the time to get to your seats....This is how it went:

ACT 1
Ovation of Hits, lights are out, except for the vines.
The music hits a point....and....Once Upon A Time Intro begins (full orch). When it gets to the fast part...
Spotlight comes on! Could It Be Magic music starts and there she is.....Donna on the top of the stairs,between half the band and orch, arms out, head back, eyes shut, in the pink flower petal top dress w/ black skirt, BIG curly hair parted on the side, like the pic of Donna & Mimi in the album) (night 2, big curly hair parted in the middle, like the other pics in the album, 3rd night, short bangs with loose curls, wavy sides). BlueGreyWhite shadow! WOW!
Donna was in her full, most glam look! (my mom said "Wow...She's pretty! Love that hair!"





Try Me (drops the wrap on the dress to reveal a flaming bustier)
Only One Man (sitting on her clear barstool)
Lights out I Remember Yesterday starts with "Sunshine" singing(Donna Comes out like Charlie Chaplin with a cane & black top hat, Long flowing black skirt, black sequin vest, black jacket)

(the next night, same outfit, 3rd night, same but all blue with white hat)



Loves Unkind (Donna replaces the hat, cane & jacket for a yellow sweater with a big glitter “D” on it and pom poms)


After....
Donna’s sisters start ragging on her “Well how does she expect to keep a man if she goes around looking like that...etc... If You’ve Got It Flaunt It (Changes the skirt to white and comes out with a white boa,

next night it was red skirt & boa, 3rd night, the white again but with the blue sequin vest top)

ACT 2
Once Upon A Time Intro (just one piano playing) then POW! The full orch kicks in!
Once Upon A Time (a Donna image, like the TGIF album, made of fireworks is lit, Donna comes from the top of the stairs in the white princess dress (with a white flower in her hair on night 2))

(OUAT had an ending un-like the L&M album.)
Fairy Tale High

Donna exits the stage, while Sunshine sings the final chorus to the end. Lights out
Faster & Faster to Nowhere starts, then the spotlight comes on...Donna, midway down the stairs, on her knees, in the multi-color veil dress) Spring Affair Winter Melody (lots of fog, Donna puts on her white fur coat) I Love You Love To Love You Baby (Donna wears a black & white striped dress, bustier top, skirt is strips of each color with BIG rhinestones on each strip, Donna’s legs go through the strips as she does the pole dance) I Feel Love Last Dance ENCORE 1 Rumour Has It (Donna wears a beaded, cobalt blue, jumpsuit w/bright pink trim, more fireworks that read “Here Comes Summer”)br>
ENCORE 2 A Song For You (Donna wears a beaded, satin, black & gold stripe kimono robe)


When Donna gets to the end of the song she says “do you get up in the morning and thank god for another day ?” Everyone Yelled back either “No” or just laughed…..they just wanted to party….Donna said “well, you’d better start” She rolls her eyes and storms off angry…..
